One Piece and it's monstrous worldbuilding!

Image
SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE IF YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED  First paragraph should be fine if you're avoiding spoilers... I think?           One Piece and it’s amazing worldbuilding. What is One Piece, it is a shonen manga series created by Eiichiro Oda. Shonen means young boy, or teenage male. Shonen is a genre of story for manga or anime where the story is designed to appeal to that type of audience, these days we don’t think of it like “It’s a show for guys” more so we think of it like “Ripped dudes fighting each other while yelling!”. Now that’s the genre, but One Piece isn’t just that, and neither is the most famous Shonen arguably Dragon Ball. One Piece follows a Monkey D. Luffy after eating the Gum Gum fruit a Devil fruit that makes him into a rubber man. He sails the seas to find crewmates so that he can become the Pirate King. Some popular shonen series set the characters up with a big goal or dream that they are deadest on usually from a young age. Son Goku’s is to be the strongest

Watchmen Episode 1 so far

I'm pretty sure that huge ship was Nite Owl's ship. When we stopped watching I was very very intrigued and immersed in the world but not knowing who is who. The showing of the Tulsa Massacre is a great way to set the tone that this show is going to have and what topics they're going to tackle, along with I believe setting up that baby as someone important? The traffic stop scene is another really well put scene as it shows us easily how different this world is from ours. The cops in this world need to be "buzzed" to be able to use their weapon. Essentially it's a button someone presses back at the station so that the officers can use their guns. Nice idea, but as we saw it can end pretty badly, which introduces us to the main antagonists of the show. Which is probably by far my favorite part of this episode, Rorschach being an idol to this group of White Supremacist. This further pushes what Alan Moore was doing with Rorschach's character in the comic ada

Watchmen's impacts and imagery

Image
Watchmen so far is a very intriguing graphic novel and has impacted comic books and cinema in a very interesting way. Batman is now an antihero, very much still a hero but he's dark and gritty, and very brutal with his different encounters with lowlifes. The 2009's Watchmen film was directed by Zack Snyder who also went on to direct, Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman, and Snyder's Justice League, in these films you definitely see how Watchmen has affected the way he sees these fictional characters in that in Man of Steel we see many different Christ like imagery with Kal El.  We see similar imagery in some scenes in the graphic novel as some panels close in on Jon's face, with the father still reciting verses from the Bible. Following the other films Snyder places the Justice League in a realistic way, Batman as an anti hero, Superman as an idolized deity with lots of humans debating whether he's a Jesus character. Watchmen dives deeper in it's novel on that era

What ya sellin'? A drink for the future Pirate King?

Image
This ad is selling the Fanta soda using the characters of the most printed comic book series ever One Piece. It makes sense for Japan to use characters that are basically mascots in their country to sell products. The little reindeer looking guy next to Luffy in the first image is another example of Japan's fixation with cute mascots, not that I'm complaining. It's like our equivalent to having Tom Holland's Spider-Man appear in a commercial for the NBA Finals. People know who Spider-Man is, over there people know who Monkey D. Luffy is. It's always been so interesting to me how Japan does their ads. They have some sort of fixation with cuteness. They even have Pikachu themed trains! What about Sonic and his friends? I mean why did the new Sonic movie interpret him as a cute young kid? Because it fits the character. There's another cute mascot for ya Japan. They've got countless mascots, from the different characters in the Animal Crossing Nintendo games to

Minstrel Shows are definitely not a vibe.

Image
American Minstrel shows spread came together along with the rise of political parties and newspaper circulation. With what I learned in class I'm still not surprised how far racism has been taken. According to Mark Twain "blackface minstrelsy became the most popular form of entertainment in the United States." It's sad how this type of entertainment got popular so fast. All these people did was take from the source that was African culture and put a mockery of it to sell tickets. I can't help but notice the images used for these different shows, it's as if they were posters for it, what was the history behind that? When did these illustrations begin? Sadly this was all normal and mainstream back in the day. The ending of our reading says that we really don't know if the minstrels created or reflected this ideology. We do know that it didn't help it either. I'm surprised we didn't learn about this in school, that shows us where our education sta
