Minstrel Shows are definitely not a vibe.
American Minstrel shows spread came together along with the rise of political parties and newspaper circulation. With what I learned in class I'm still not surprised how far racism has been taken. According to Mark Twain "blackface minstrelsy became the most popular form of entertainment in the United States." It's sad how this type of entertainment got popular so fast. All these people did was take from the source that was African culture and put a mockery of it to sell tickets. I can't help but notice the images used for these different shows, it's as if they were posters for it, what was the history behind that? When did these illustrations begin?
Sadly this was all normal and mainstream back in the day. The ending of our reading says that we really don't know if the minstrels created or reflected this ideology. We do know that it didn't help it either. I'm surprised we didn't learn about this in school, that shows us where our education stands in comparison to college. I am very glad that these aren't a thing anymore, but there are still individuals who are uneducated.
