Watchmen Episode 1 so far

I'm pretty sure that huge ship was Nite Owl's ship. When we stopped watching I was very very intrigued and immersed in the world but not knowing who is who. The showing of the Tulsa Massacre is a great way to set the tone that this show is going to have and what topics they're going to tackle, along with I believe setting up that baby as someone important? The traffic stop scene is another really well put scene as it shows us easily how different this world is from ours. The cops in this world need to be "buzzed" to be able to use their weapon. Essentially it's a button someone presses back at the station so that the officers can use their guns. Nice idea, but as we saw it can end pretty badly, which introduces us to the main antagonists of the show. Which is probably by far my favorite part of this episode, Rorschach being an idol to this group of White Supremacist. This further pushes what Alan Moore was doing with Rorschach's character in the comic adaption having him be morally ambiguous to the reader. Rorschach was a very cool character for me and even had some awesome one liners, but the fact that people saw him as an idol and formed a white supremacist group opens our eyes to the truth that others may seem him differently, in fact they do. The interrogation scene was very interesting, I wonder if that'll be explained or dived into more with the usage of different ads and images of their history of idols and other media. I really want to see what part will Jon play in this story, they show him on Mars still, which was an awesome way to show us he's still around. We also saw Veidt on a newspaper can't remember what it read but that gave us a hint that he's probably still around which we do see that the great Jeremy Irons is playing him, very interested to see what he does in this role. The whole squid scene was very weird and unsettling, while the characters seemed unfazed by this obviously this tells us this is very normal for humanity right now. I'm wondering if they're still strictly keeping only Jon as the superpowered being and not opening this up to the bigger DC Universe because seeing more Minutemen and having the main character I believe as one of these non super powered beings keeps the narrative very similar to the comic, except it's changing the whole topic of nuclear warfare and vigilantes being a problem to what we deal with today in terms of racial injustice. Also I love that the police cars are now red and yellow instead of red and blue, keeping the yellow aesthetic from the comics logo alive along with the yellow masks. I can't wait to see what else this series has in store for us.

  1. Your analysis of this first episode was great! You pulled out a ton of connnection to the comic too. I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out what was going on and who was who, so reading this actually helped me. I'm also really interested to see if the baby at the beginning is important and if we get to find out who they are. Also, as you mentioned, Rorschach is portrayed in such an interesting way in the show. I think it makes a lot of sense to have him seen as a more evil character. But I don't totally get the idea behind a whole group dressing up as him. I'm interested to find out where that goes. And the interrigation scene was probably one of my favorites too. I kind of felt that the reflective mask was similar to the idea of Rorschach's since it reflects images to evaluate a persons sanity/opinions. I hope there are more connections to the comic later on in the show.
