What ya sellin'? A drink for the future Pirate King?
This ad is selling the Fanta soda using the characters of the most printed comic book series ever One Piece. It makes sense for Japan to use characters that are basically mascots in their country to sell products. The little reindeer looking guy next to Luffy in the first image is another example of Japan's fixation with cute mascots, not that I'm complaining. It's like our equivalent to having Tom Holland's Spider-Man appear in a commercial for the NBA Finals. People know who Spider-Man is, over there people know who Monkey D. Luffy is. It's always been so interesting to me how Japan does their ads. They have some sort of fixation with cuteness. They even have Pikachu themed trains!
What about Sonic and his friends? I mean why did the new Sonic movie interpret him as a cute young kid? Because it fits the character. There's another cute mascot for ya Japan. They've got countless mascots, from the different characters in the Animal Crossing Nintendo games to Mario and friends. Japan is home to a lot of characters that you might not have even known if you didn't research it.
If you take a look at this ad here it's a McDonalds ad in Anime form. I've worked at Burger King and anyone else who's worked at fast food like this will probably have different experiences, mine wasn't all that great. Which didn't detract from the very happy charm these two ads show. I saw a couple of things that I did see at my job, but this ad had a charm of its own. Apparently it went viral as well I believe. This just a small taste as to what Japan's ad's look like, there's a rabbit hole of videos on the YouTubes on some very creepy and questionable ads in the past for many different countries but Japan especially. Glad those days are behind us, anyways thanks for reading, hope you have a good one and that this was able to give you some cool insight as to what I found in my research on Japan's ads!
The influence of kawaii culture on US culture, specifically types of ads, would be a really good final topic, if you're interested.
